Record Description
Built on the Parana River on the Brazil-Paraguay border and operational since 1984, the Itaipu Dam has generated over 100 terawatt-hours of electricity in a single year and has long supplied a large share of both nations' power. It held the record for the world's highest-capacity hydroelectric plant until China's Three Gorges Dam surpassed it in 2012.
