Mponeng, a gold mine near Carletonville, reaches roughly 4,000 metres below the surface, making it the deepest single mine shaft on Earth. Miners endure rock temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius, cooled by an extensive refrigeration system, during the long descent to the working face.
