Surgeon Christiaan Barnard led the team that transplanted a human heart from one person to another for the first time, at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. The patient, Louis Washkansky, survived 18 days after the operation, and the procedure reshaped modern transplant medicine worldwide.
