Covering roughly 650,000 square kilometres across Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries, the Rub' al Khali, or "Empty Quarter," is the largest unbroken expanse of sand desert on the planet. Much of it lies within Saudi territory, with dunes that in places rise more than 250 metres high.
