Record Description

Excavated near Sanliurfa in southeastern Turkey, Gobekli Tepe consists of massive carved stone pillars arranged in circles dating back roughly 11,000 years, predating Stonehenge by about six millennia. Archaeologists regard it as the oldest known monumental religious structure built by humans, raised before settled agriculture began.
