Record Description

The Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered in caves near Qumran starting in 1947, include the oldest known copies of large portions of the Hebrew Bible, with some fragments dating back to roughly the third century BCE. The roughly 900 manuscripts survived for two millennia thanks to the region's dry desert climate. They remain one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century.
