Record Description
Bialowieza Forest, straddling the Poland-Belarus border, is the largest surviving fragment of the primeval lowland forest that once covered much of the European plain. It shelters the largest free-roaming population of the European bison, the heaviest land animal native to Europe, after the species was reintroduced from captive-bred stock in the 1950s following its extinction in the wild. The forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
