Portugal traces its founding as an independent kingdom to 1139, when Afonso Henriques declared himself king, with its borders essentially fixed by the 13th century. Those borders have remained largely unchanged for more than 700 years, making Portugal one of the oldest states in Europe with stable frontiers.
