Record Description

The Corinth Canal, completed in 1893, cuts a 6.4-kilometer channel through solid rock to connect the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, shortening the sea route around the Peloponnese by hundreds of kilometers. At just under 25 meters wide, it is too narrow for most modern cargo ships and is now used mainly by small vessels and tourist cruises. Its steep rock walls make it one of the most dramatic and narrowest sea-level canals still in operation anywhere.
