Record Description
Sigiriya is a fifth-century rock citadel rising about 200 meters above the surrounding plain, built by King Kashyapa as a fortified palace complete with gardens, moats, and frescoed galleries. Its combination of ancient engineering and artistry has led travelers and historians to nickname it the eighth wonder of the world. UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1982.
