Record Description

Tradition holds that Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon was first built more than 2,500 years ago, which would make it one of the oldest Buddhist stupas on Earth, though the earliest confirmed historical record of it dates only to the 14th century. The gilded structure was rebuilt to its current 99-meter height in 1775 after earthquake damage and is crowned with thousands of diamonds and rubies. It remains Myanmar's most sacred Buddhist site.
