Record Description
The plains of Bagan once held more than 10,000 Buddhist temples, monasteries, and stupas built mostly between the 11th and 13th centuries, with roughly 2,000 still standing today. The sheer density of ancient religious architecture spread across the plain has few equals anywhere in the world. UNESCO added Bagan to its World Heritage list in 2019.
