Record Description
Tonle Sap shrinks to about 2,500 to 3,000 square kilometers in the dry season but swells to roughly 16,000 square kilometers in the wet season, when its outlet river reverses direction and floods the lake basin. This seasonal pulse makes it the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and one of the world's most productive inland fisheries. Millions of Cambodians depend on it directly for food and livelihood.
