Oldest City in the Americas

The ruins of Caral, north of Lima, include monumental pyramid platforms built around the same time ancient Egyptians were raising their own pyramids, roughly 4,600 years ago. Archaeologists consider it the oldest known urban center in the Americas, predating other major early civilizations of the hemisphere by more than a thousand years. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.
