Above the point where the Catatumbo River meets Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela, thunderstorms generate lightning on as many as 300 nights a year, with flash rates reaching nearly 250 per square kilometer annually. Guinness World Records formally recognized the phenomenon, known as the Catatumbo Lightning, as the highest concentration of lightning anywhere in the world in January 2013.
