Record Description

When UNESCO created its World Heritage List in 1978, Ecuador's Galapagos Islands were among the very first properties added, giving them the distinction of being one of the original sites on the list. The volcanic archipelago is prized for the unique wildlife that helped shape Charles Darwin's ideas on natural selection. It remains one of the most ecologically significant protected areas on the planet.
