Record Description
Archaeological evidence from the Salzkammergut region shows salt has been mined at Hallstatt for roughly 7,000 years, making it the oldest known salt mine still being worked anywhere on Earth. Excavations have uncovered remarkably preserved Bronze Age tools and even the remains of prehistoric miners within the mine's naturally preserving salt deposits. The site gave its name to the "Hallstatt culture," an important European Iron Age period.
